Finding a reliable family doctor in Hamilton can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re new to the city or your current physician has moved on. The good news? Hamilton has approximately 40 family medicine practices that meet our quality standards โ those with ratings of 4.3+ and at least 20 verified patient reviews.
What surprised me most while researching Hamilton’s family medicine landscape was the consistency of high ratings across different practice types. Whether you’re looking at established walk-in clinics or newer comprehensive healthcare centers, the average rating sits at an impressive 4.7 stars. Some practices are even managing to see new patients within a week, which is pretty remarkable in today’s healthcare climate.

Customer Reviews:
I have never written a review for any doctor and I think this clinic deserves one from me. The receptionists were both polite and helpful. Since I did not have an appointment, I was told that they were about 3 people ahead of me and that, I appreciated.
I requested to be seen by a female doctor and they accomodated my request. Dr Enebeli was sincerely interested in my concerns, polite, respectful and listened to what I had to say. Before she diagnosed me, she requested my medical history reports from my pharmacy, my soon to be previous family doctor and specialists that have been attending me and booked me for a follow up appointment within a reasonable timeframe. I really liked that she wanted to know my medical history before prescribing me anything.
I think I finally found a good doctor closer to where I live.
The only area of improvement I could point out are the floors in the waiting area. They really need attention. I am sure this is something that the practice can easily fix and does not really affect the excellent healthcare offered by the clinic.
My appointment today was fantastic. Azra was great with my prep and the appointments were excellent.
They take the time to really listen and that was paramount for today. So very glad to have this office so close to home.
Thank you Drella Medical Team!!!

Very good service , Dr. Is amazing,
We happy to bring our son there!
2025
Adding a new review to my old one, to express my gratitudeto the front desk gentlemen and the doctor at the clinic.
We had an excellent experience with Dr. Michiels today. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything clearly and in detail. What I especially appreciated was the way he spoke directly to my teenage daughter, making sure she understood and felt comfortable. He not only addressed our concerns but also took the opportunity to educate her, which was very reassuring for both of us. His professionalism, patience, and approachable manner made the visit a very positive one. I would highly recommend Dr.Michels!
2020. I have been a patient in the clinic for almost a decade. The new location is very well maintained and organized. The service provided is fast and very efficient. The lady at the reception is very polite and helpful. Visits are easy to schedule and the waiting time is very reasonable.
Dr.Hughes and Dr.Bassam Al-Anee are both very caring, very respectful and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

Customer Reviews:
My parents initially became clients of Dr. Daoโs and after hearing their feedback, they recommended all of my family members to be patients of his as well. We are eternally grateful Dr. Dao took us all on.
If every general practitioner could be as good as Dr. Dao, the world would truly be a better place. Not only is he fluent in Vietnamese and English for my family, he is also so knowledgeable and thorough.
I do not know what my family and I would do if it werenโt for Dr. Dao and all of his associates. With the Ontario Healthcare system being the way it is, they always do their best to accommodate when they can.
They treat you with patience, kindness, and understanding. Iโve never felt dismissed with any concerns Iโve brought up but rather was given explanations of other options or potential reasons.
They also seem to have a lot of amazing dermatology services that I plan to look more into. Their new office is stunning and they continue to provide the best services on the phone, over email, and in person. โฅ๏ธ
Hands down the best Dr I have been too. Kind, patient, knowledgeable, and amazing with kids. The staff are incredible as well. It’s a warm, friendly, welcoming environment. Lauren is a ray of sunshine, and feels like an old friend. Evelyn has gone above and beyond, tracking medication down during a covid shortage. I tend to be on edge in medical settings, but I always felt as ease here. Even when it’s exceptionally busy, and the phone is ringing off the hook, everyone is still pleasant. I switched physicians due to proximity, I needed something within walking distance, talk about regrets.

How to Choose the Best Family Doctor in Hamilton
Selecting the right family physician is one of the most important healthcare decisions you’ll make. A good family doctor becomes your medical advocate and long-term health partner, so it’s worth taking time to find someone who truly fits your needs.
- โ Check if they’re accepting new patients and typical wait times
- โ Verify their credentials and years of practice experience
- โ Consider location convenience and parking accessibility
- โ Review their appointment booking system and office hours
- โ Look for comprehensive services (walk-in, family care, preventive medicine)
- โ Read recent patient reviews about communication style and care quality
- โ Ensure they accept your health insurance or payment method
New Patient Acceptance
This is probably your first concern โ many family practices have closed books. Call ahead to confirm they’re taking new patients and ask about typical wait times for the first appointment. Some clinics can see you within a week, others might have months-long waiting lists.
Experience and Credentials
Look for doctors with solid experience in family medicine โ ideally several years or more. Check where they completed their medical training and whether they have additional certifications. Experienced physicians often handle complex cases more confidently and have established referral networks.
Office Technology and Convenience
Modern practices use technology to improve your experience โ online booking, real-time wait notifications, electronic health records. Also consider practical factors like wheelchair accessibility, parking availability, and whether the location works for your commute or family needs.
Communication Style
Patient reviews often reveal how doctors communicate โ whether they listen well, explain conditions clearly, and make you feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics. Some patients prefer direct, efficient visits while others want more time for discussion. Find what matches your style.

- โ Organizations have grown rapidly, with some managing over 40 practices within four years
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get an appointment with a new family doctor in Hamilton?
It varies quite a bit depending on the practice. Some clinics like Abundance Healthcare can see new patients within a week, which is pretty impressive for 2026. However, many established family doctors have waiting lists that can stretch several months. Your best bet is to call multiple practices and ask directly about their current wait times. Walk-in clinics can be a good interim solution while you wait for your first appointment with a new family physician.
What should I expect to pay for family doctor visits in Hamilton?
If you have an Ontario health card (OHIP), most family doctor visits are covered at no direct cost to you. However, some services like medical notes for work, travel vaccinations, or cosmetic procedures may have fees. Walk-in clinics typically operate the same way. Most practices (87% in Hamilton) accept debit cards for any fees that aren’t covered by OHIP. It’s always good to ask about potential charges when booking appointments for specific services.
Should I choose a walk-in clinic or a traditional family practice?
It depends on your healthcare needs and lifestyle. Traditional family practices offer continuity of care โ the same doctor gets to know your health history and can spot changes over time. Walk-in clinics are more flexible for urgent issues and don’t require appointments, but you might see different doctors each visit. Many Hamilton practices actually offer both services, like Drella Medical Clinic which provides both family practice and walk-in care. This gives you the best of both worlds โ a consistent family doctor plus convenience when you need it.
